Stepping Stonesage 2 – young 4s  Step into the wonderful world of music in this new exciting class! This unique curriculum includes singing familiar folk and children’s songs, rhythmic and musical movement, and experiential activities with the piano, bells, and basic percussion. Special units emphasize classical music listening, and instrument observation.  Some instrument introductions will include hands-on experiences.  Parent participation is optional. Class meets September 12- June 10.

Music Boxage 3 – young 4s  Songs, games, dance-a-stories, crafts, rhythmic activities, movement, and creative ideas related to the child’s world are correlated with themes encouraging children to respond to musical concepts. Keyboard and instruments are used for basic instruction and self-expression. Music Box students learn to hear shapes of music, identify and match melodic patterns, and identify instruments, recordings, and specific sounds. Parents may stay for a short time at the beginning of the class until their child is comfortable.  Class meets September 12 – June 10.  Materials: My Yellow Book

Pathways age 4 – 6  This comprehensive curriculum is taught through four age-appropriate development principles:

  1. Hearing – each child learns to listen carefully, developing the ability to concentrate, discriminate, identify, and enjoy the relationship of sounds
  2. Rhythm – children respond to patterns in songs and games with large and small body movement
  3. Reading – each child learns to identify the symbols of music, approaching music-reading as a natural extension of the listening process
  4. Playing – children develop facility at the keyboard, coordinating and refining the areas of hearing, moving and reading

Piano lessons are saved for a later time, after the child has had a broad introduction to reading and understanding music.  Pathways students enjoy musical games, crafts, and musical stories.  Class meets September 12 – June 10.  Materials: I Can Play Keyboard Series and Hello Music Workbooks 1 and 2

Young Musiciansage 5 – 6  Children who are in Kindergarten learn best when taught through a whole child approach to music—singing, moving, creating, and learning through a wide range of experiences.   Young Musicians students may choose to continue as general music majors with no practice required, or choose to begin skill development on piano or violin, in which lessons are carefully planned for the child’s age, physical development, and concentration level.  Majoring in piano or violin requires an instrument at home, and the child and the parent need to make a commitment to practice outside of class time.   Class meets September 12 – June 10.  Materials: The Young Musician Keyboard Book 1, Hello Music 3, assignment books, and additional individually selected materials.

AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES


Adventures  grades 1 – 3   Students participate in large group activities, small group centers, and individual projects to allow musical growth through positive experiences. Kaleidoscopegrades 4 – 7  Students develop musical appreciation and skills through learning centers, ensembles, listening, music history, and composition activities.  All students are taught proper vocal, piano, and music-reading skills and basic theory. Kaleidoscope students may choose from the following majors for a group lesson within class time: piano, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, trumpet, trombone, drums, or guitar, which requires an instrument at home, and a commitment to practice outside of class time.  Occasionally a student may require individual lessons and in this case, an extra fee would be charged for private instruction.  Students may choose to enroll as a general major, which requires no at-home practice.  The Choral Series Concert, Spring Musical, and student recitals are included in the class. Class meets September 12 – June 10.  Materials: Kaleidoscope Activity Books, Just Playing Piano Series, assignment books, and additional individually selected materials.

Privateage 6* – adults  Private Lessons may be scheduled for vocal or instrumental instruction, and include skill development and technique, music-reading, and improvisation.  Lessons include opportunities to perform solos, duets or ensembles in student recitals.  Teachers select materials and repertoire that is appropriate for each student.  Piano instruction is based on the Just Playing series, with supplementary materials as determined by the teachers.  Materials fees are billed separately. Lessons meet September 12 – June 10.  *Individual lessons are most successful when age-appropriate: piano, violin – age 6 minimum, age 8 recommended; voice – age 13 recommended; woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion, guitar – age 9+ recommended.

Group Piano  grades 3 – 7  Beginning and intermediate piano students will learn solos and ensembles, skill development and technique, music-reading, and improvisation.  Students are offered opportunities to perform solos, duets or ensembles in student recitals. Group Piano is 30 – 60 minutes weekly, as determined by the size of the group and the teachers’ assessment.  Materials include the Just Playing series, and additional supplementary repertoire.  Materials fees are billed separately.  Class meets September 12 – June 10.

Theory age 8 – adults  Reinforce your instrumental or vocal lessons with music theory. Students will be evaluated to determine their level and receive instruction in reading, writing, and understanding music.  Fundamentals will include note reading, major and minor scales, major and minor key signatures, circle of 5ths, intervals, triad, patterns, simple and compound meters, chord construction, and terms and symbols.  Most appropriate for students who have at least one semester of experience  in voice or their instrument.  Meets September 12 – June 10.

CHORAL ENSEMBLES

Singing Children grades 2 – 5  This children’s choir focuses on healthy, age-appropriate vocal training, performance skill development, basic music-reading skills and general musicianship.  Musical selections include classical, folk, and fun music.  Singing Children perform at the Music School and in the community. Class meets September 12 – June 10.

Music in America – age 4 – 10  Students will enjoy learning and celebrating American music. Experience instruments, singing, listening, musical drama, crafts, and musical stories from different parts of the country and throughout our history.  This class will be fun, creative, and a great musical experience.

Fantasy Camp: Super Heroes and Princesses  age 5- 9  Come and enjoy  fantasy songs and drama, as heroes, villains and princesses!  Includes hands-on time with percussion instruments, xylophones, keyboards and more.   Dress for the part and bring your cape or crown!  Informal presentation on the last day of class.

Music & Art Camp age 4 – 10  Music and art activities planned for enjoyment, creativity, and growth – singing, musical games, instrumental ensembles, folk dancing, making instruments, weaving, clay, collages, painting, puppets, combined music/art/drama projects and more.  Professional music and art faculty will provide for large and small group participation and individual attention.

Rhythm, Rhythm Everywhere  age 4 – 10  Students will have hands-on experience with percussion, piano, bells, and movement.  Explore the wonderful world of rhythm while making music with percussion instruments, hand bells, xylophones and pianos.  You won’t want to miss our “Stomp Session.”

Choir Camp  ages 7 – 12  Students will focus on vocal production, theory, sight-singing, and performance skills.  Music includes camp songs, classical, folk, popular, ethnic, and musical theater.  Parents will be invited to an informal performance on the last day.

Music Around the World  age 4 – 10  Students will enjoy learning about music from different cultures. Experience instruments, singing, listening, musical drama, crafts, and musical stories from Brazil, Ireland and Japan.  This class will be fun, creative, and a great multicultural experience.

Broadway Babies age 4 – 7  It’s show time for the little ones!  This four-day workshop is the a great opportunity for young children to participate in an age-appropriate mini-musical.  Broadway Babies learn to sing, dance, act, make their own costumes, props and sets, and enjoy games, fun piano ensembles and camp songs.

Group Lessons are 30 – 60 minutes weekly, as determined by the size of the group and the teachers’ assessment. Materials fees are billed separately. 6-week session begins June 20th.

MUSICAL THEATER

Summer Musical Theatergrades 1 – 6  Spend the summer being a star in this six-week musical theater production!  A full experience – from learning to audition to a final performance, this class includes proper singing technique, choreography, acting, and performance skills. Parents get involved with costumes, set, and production. 6-week session begins June 20th. Attendance is required for both performances: July 29th and July 30th, as well as 2 additional Wednesday rehearsals.  Enrollment is limited.

SPECIALTY CAMPS

Rockin’ Out at Rock Academy – grades 4 – 7*    Come join the band and rock out! Get hands-on experience with electric guitar, electric bass, drum set, plus rock history and more!  Dress like the rock star you are and prepare for an informal performance at the end of the day.  Bring your own instrument, or we will provide one!  *If you are interested in this class for students grades 1-3, please CONTACT THE OFFICE.

Superhero Superstars – age 3 – 12    Reveal your secret identity and celebrate your super powers! Learn hero songs and stage combat!  Come in your super suit and gather the citizens in the afternoon for some live action!

Practice Tips for Parents adults  Students learning to play an instrument requires participation and encouragement from their parents. We will sing, add instruments,  and just swing for an hour for 4 weeks.
